In 1886 Bernard became friends with Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh and began studying the paintings of Cézanne exhibited at the shop of the color merchant Père Tanguy in Paris. Bernard conceived this still life in the synthetist style he developed with Gauguin, characterized by dark, saturated colors, flat, thick impasto and black lines surrounding the objects.
