One of a handful of female photographers from that period, her compelling and insightful photographs established a new model in portraiture especially as it concerned the traditional depiction of women, and the depiction of male subjects by a female artist. The finely composed portrait of George Livia is the first male subject by Dater in the museum’s collection. Dater met her subject, as aspiring photographer himself, while teaching a workshop in Buenos Aires. He reciprocates our gaze with sincerity, intensity, even a romantic quality illustrative of the complexities that Dater coaxes from her subjects. |
