| Happy Lovers, c. 1760-65 Jean-Honoré Fragonard French, 1732-1806 Oil on canvas 35-1/2 x 47-3/4 in. (90.2 x 121.3 cm) The Norton Simon Foundation F.1965.1.021.P © 2012 The Norton Simon Foundation On view Jean-Honoré Fragonard was the greatest French painter of the gallant and sentimental subjects popular during the reign of Louis XV. In this painting, two young lovers have escaped the restraints of the court to a secluded, rustic retreat. The scene is embroidered with patterns of branches, leaves, and flowers that are as blissful and carefree as the subjects themselves. The pastel colors, voluptuously painted surface and portrayal of playful love epitomize the subjects and style of the French Rococo. View Provenance
