| Saints Anthony and Peter, c. 1390-95 Niccolo di Pietro Gerini Italian, active 1368-1415 Tempera on panel 46-3/4 x 30 in. (118.7 x 76.2 cm) Norton Simon Art Foundation M.1979.50.P © 2012 Norton Simon Art Foundation Not on view Dated to the end of the fourteenth century, this panel depicting two saints was likely part of a larger ensemble that presented an important scene from the life of Christ or the Virgin Mary at center, with another pair of saints on the opposite side. Anthony the Abbot, a Christian saint from Egypt, was considered to be the founder of monasticism. Gerini’s depiction of the saint as an elderly monk with a walking stick was customary for the time. Saint Peter is shown here with his attribute, a pair of keys, which refer to Christ’s words to the apostle from Matthew 16:19: “I will give to thee the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven.” View Provenance |
