A native of Naples, Corrado Giaquinto was an early exponent of the Italian Rococo, a style characterized by its sumptuous color, exquisite surface finish and decorative appeal.

In 1762, Giaquinto embarked on his last great project, the decoration for the new sacristy of the Church of San Francesco in Palazzo in Naples (since destroyed). The seven paintings, executed in fresco and oil, illustrate scenes from the life of the Virgin. Marriage of the Virgin is one of only four that have survived. The underlying theme of the decorative cycle is the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, the belief that Mary was conceived without Original Sin.
