| Doña Francisca Vicenta Chollet y Caballero, 1806 Francisco de Goya y Lucientes Spanish, 1746-1828 Oil on canvas 40-1/2 x 31-7/8 in. (102.9 x 80.9 cm) Norton Simon Art Foundation M.1981.7.P © 2012 Norton Simon Art Foundation On view In 1799, Goya was made First Court Painter to King Charles IV of Spain. For the next ten years he painted numerous official portraits of the royal family, and many portraits of subjects outside the circle at court. His works from this period are noted for their forceful and direct realism and display Goya's extraordinary skill as a colorist. In this portrait, Goya combines elements of delicate detail, the embroidery of her dress, her tiara, and the dog's collar, with an equally free, palpable brushwork. The simplicity of the composition and reduction of spatial depth give the subject a quiet and intimate character. View Provenance
