Though Stanley William Hayter had established himself as an intaglio printmaker through his long and successful career at Atelier 17, he nonetheless made his way from Paris to Los Angeles to be a guest artist at Tamarind Lithography Workshop in 1967. His work in the early 1960s took a turn away from the abstract surrealist mode in which he had practiced since the 1930s, and he became much more interested in motion, mathematics and the brilliance of op art. In one of only two lithographs he created at the Los Angeles workshop, Hayter used just two colors, plus the white of the paper, to create a complicated pattern. The diagonal arabesque of strategically placed reds, grays and whites exemplifies just how successful the veteran printmaker was at thinking in terms of the layered nature of printmaking.
