Norton Simon Museum, Anonymous Gift, 1971 P.1971.7.163 © 2011 John Hunter Not on view John Hunter created this portrait of fellow artist Sam Francis (1923–1994) in March 1969 while the two of them were working at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles. Hunter took Francis’s signature style—splattered dots of contrasting color—and applied it to his cartoon-like portrait of the elder artist, who he depicts with his characteristic dripping brush. The figure is almost Santa Claus–like, with an unkempt crown of wavy white hair and a comically rotund body. |
