| Trees in Autumn, c. 1906 Ernst Ludwig Kirchner German, 1880-1938 Oil on paperboard 27-7/8 x 19-5/8 in. (70.8 x 49.8 cm) Norton Simon Museum, Gift of Mr. B. Gerald Cantor P.1966.03.3 © (for works by E. L. Kirchner) by Ingeborg & Dr. Wolfgang Henze-Ketterer, Wichtrach/Bern Not on view Kirchner was one of the great leaders of German Expressionism as a painter, graphic artist, sculptor, and photographer. He co-founded the artists' group Die Brücke (The Bridge), intended to be a bridge to a new international position for German art. The depiction of this passive forest landscape is enlivened by the rich colors laid down in large, thick, and lengthy strokes. Marking a pivotal point in the artist's career, this painting bridges the transformation between Kirchner's more decorative, French-influenced divisionist style and the full-fledged expressionist style he developed within Die Brücke group beginning in 1907.
