A pupil of his elder brother, Adriaen, Isaac van Ostade lived in Haarlem and died there at age twenty-eight. He is best known for his scenes of picturesque peasants. This precocious work, painted with the warm muted tones of the Haarlem style, was completed when the artist was twenty years old.
