| Head of Woman, 1971 Pablo Picasso Spanish, 1881-1973 Pastel on grey board 11-5/8 x 8-1/4 in. (29.5 x 21 cm) Norton Simon Art Foundation M.1979.32.P © 2011 Estate of Pablo Picasso / Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York Reproduction, including downloading of ARS works is prohibited by copyright laws and international conventions without the express written permission of Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York Not on view One of the most vivid, recurring motifs throughout Picasso's career was the female head. In this late pastel, Picasso reached back to his early Cubist preoccupations with simultaneous representation of the object. The speed with which he recorded his idea for this head is evident in the sometimes sketchy, sometimes rough use of pastel on board. His colors, no doubt, have as much emotional as decorative value and bear no allegiance to reality. View Provenance |
