| Landscape with Flock of Sheep, 1889 and 1902 Camille Pissarro French, 1830-1903 Oil on canvas 23-3/4 x 29 in. (60.3 x 73.7 cm) Norton Simon Museum, Gift of Mrs. Reese Hale Taylor P.1964.24 © 2012 Norton Simon Museum Not on view In pristine condition, Landscape with Flock of Sheep asserts Camille Pissarro’s position as the paterfamilias of the Impressionist group (he was the only artist to participate in all eight Impressionist exhibitions). The fluttering texture of his brushwork and the luminosity of his pigment are unsullied by restoration, and the surface of the picture remains in as much of its original state as possible, given its age. Indeed, the canvas has never been lined, a process that entails adhering another piece of linen to the back of the original canvas which can flatten the texture of the paint. Nor has it been varnished, allowing the subtleties of tone—from the variation in ochres and browns in the grasses to the grays, blues and whites in the cloudy northern French sky—to conjure this simple pastoral scene.
