| The Poultry Market at Pontoise, 1882 Camille Pissarro French, 1830-1903 Oil on canvas 31-7/8 x 25-5/8 in. (81 x 65.1 cm) Norton Simon Art Foundation M.1984.2.P © 2012 Norton Simon Art Foundation On view Pissarro was an important force in the development of Impressionism, and the only artist to exhibit in each of the eight Impressionist exhibitions. Yet his paintings are generally not considered spontaneous; he usually worked on his meticulously constructed compositions in his studio from sketches. This painting is one of several studies of the lively poultry market in Pontoise and well illustrates the highly keyed color palette Pissarro used at this time. His deftly placed brushstrokes anticipate Pointillism, which Pissarro named and used along with Seurat and Signac three years later. View Provenance
