| View of Berneval, 1900 Camille Pissarro French, 1830-1903 Oil on canvas 28-3/4 x 36-1/4 in. (73.0 x 92.1 cm) Norton Simon Art Foundation, from the Estate of Jennifer Jones Simon M.2010.1.9.P © 2012 Norton Simon Art Foundation On view This picturesque view is one of seven completed by Camille Pissarro during his visit to Berneval from July to September 1900. The small resort community in Normandy was a popular destination for French artists and the social elite in the late 19th century. Here, the passage through the seaside town begins in the garden of the Grand Hôtel, where Pissarro stayed. An elevated perspective allows the spectator to stroll past the trees and scattered chalets toward the jagged cliffs that give way to the ocean in the distance. View Provenance |
