Dido has told her sister Anna of the conflict between her passion for Aeneas and her loyalty to the memory of her dead husband. Anna persuades her to keep Aeneas in Carthage, and together they propitiate the gods by making sacrifices. Dido pours a libation while her servants prepare to slay a heifer in order to consult its entrails.
