| Carp with Fly, 1969 Edward Ruscha American, 1937- Lithograph on white Arches paper; torn and deckle edges sheet: 17-1/8 x 24 in. (43.5 x 61.0 cm); Image: 13-1/2 x 19 in. (34.3 x 48.3 cm.) Norton Simon Museum, Anonymous Gift P.1972.08.017 © 2012 Edward Ruscha Not on view Carp with Fly was printed using the same green ink and stone plate that was employed for a piece called Carp, created the week before. Using two more colors, Ruscha added a fly, dark shading and water drops. In several of his Tamarind prints, the artist included unexpected, somewhat incongruous objects at their actual size, such as a fly, a marble and an olive. He once remarked, “Often when an idea is so overwhelming, I use a small unlike item to ‘nag’ the theme.” |
