Norton Simon Museum, Anonymous Gift, 1969 P.1969.092.082 © 2011 James Strombotne Not on view Printmaking has been a significant part of James Strombotne’s oeuvre since early on: his MFA thesis at Claremont was a suite of etchings inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Brothers Karamazov. He had practiced intaglio, lithography and screenprinting before his first visits to Tamarind Lithography Workshop as a guest artist in 1963 and 1965, and when he returned there as an artist-fellow in 1968, Strombotne printed over 20 lithographs, among them the Recognitions suite. Using a dramatic graphic style and a brightly colored palette, Strombotne commented on contemporary social and political mores. Recognitions, according to the artist, was a summation of the artistic interests he had explored in various media in the previous decade. |
