Signed and dated by the most important marine painter of the eighteenth century, this tranquil scene is executed with Vernet’s characteristic delicacy and atmospheric light. This highly prolific artist spent twenty years in Italy beginning in 1734, where he depicted seascapes and was elected to the Accademia di San Luca in 1743. He was summoned back to France by Louis XV, who commissioned him to paint large views of the important seaports of France.
