All of Tamarind’s lithographs have a unique number, and in anticipation of this momentous achievement, the number 1,000 was reserved for the founder, June Wayne. The artist, however, did not get around to completing the work for several months, and when she finally did, her colleagues exclaimed, “At last! A thousand!” This lithograph, a marker of Wayne’s superb technical advancements, can be seen as both a culmination and a projection of what was to come in her oeuvre. She returned to cosmic imagery as her career progressed, and the texture of the print, which determined the subject—none of it was drawn—was achieved through a complex application of sprayed tusche, salt, sand and other debris.
