| The Star: Dancer on Pointe, c. 1878-1880 Edgar Degas French, 1834-1917 Gouache and pastel on paper, mounted on board 22-1/4 x 29-3/4 in. (56.5 x 75.6 cm) The Norton Simon Foundation F.1969.40.P © 2012 The Norton Simon Foundation On view Degas often incorporated relatively empty, "passive" areas as compositional foils. In "The Star," there is a calculated balance between figure, color, and movement on one side and the empty stage and scenery to which the star gestures on the other. The composition is fashioned from six separate pieces of paper, which were added as the artist enlarged and changed his design. View Provenance
