| Frieze with Worshipers, c. 150 India: Uttar Pradesh, Mathura, 125-175 Sandstone 11-1/2 x 48 x 2-1/2 in. (29.2 x 121.9 x 6.4 cm) The Norton Simon Foundation F.1975.13.1.S © 2012 The Norton Simon Foundation On view These male worshipers carry garlands, lotuses, and fly whisks as offerings to the Buddha. Because the two ends of the frieze are damaged, one cannot be certain of the exact architectural context in which it was used. It may have served as a lintel in a shrine or perhaps was part of a crossbeam in a gateway for a Buddhist stupa. |
