Traditional Indian music is organized into a complicated system of families according to its emotional and structural content; each family consists of a male raga with five wives, or raginis, forming a ragamala, or “a garland of melodies.” Each raga is associated with a particular human emotion or mood, such as heroism, devotion or passion, as well as a certain time of day or season. Malavapanchama is a lordly figure seated on a throne and is being fanned by a young maiden.
