Scourging of Christ
c.1500-10
Master of Alkmaar (Dutch, active c. 1475-c.1515)
Not on View

This small panel, as well as its companion panel Road to Calvary, both of which were probably cut down in the eighteenth century (on the top and bottom), were presumably part of a larger altarpiece with other scenes depicting the Passion of Christ. In each, onlookers and tormentors have individualized features, exaggerated expressions, and angular movements that together convey the dramatic and agonizing moments leading up to the Crucifixion.

This unknown artist (whose name derives from a polyptych which is now in the Rijksmuseum but which originally belonged to the St. Laurenskerk in Alkmaar) was probably active in Amsterdam at the beginning of the sixteenth century. He has sometimes been linked to a pair of brothers named Van Waterlant who were active in Haarlem, as well as the Alkmaar painter Cornelis Buys the Elder.
