On view

This painting was one of two small works that fit into an architectural space as suggested by the geometrical, blocked-out areas in the lower lateral portions of the composition. They may have been finished studies for a larger decorative project whose exact destination is unknown. Dressed in flecked and patterned peignoirs, the dream-like beings who inhabit this ideal park are close in spirit to the work of Japanese prints. The straight trees in irregular, slim columns recall the innumerable symbolist depictions of "sacred woods" by artists such as Puvis de Chavannes.
