The Artist's Mother, Head and Bust: Three-Quarters Right
1628
Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669)
Not on View

The most available models for the young artist, apart from his own visage in a mirror, were family members. Rembrandt’s mother appears in a number of his etchings, her wrinkled visage delicately, even tenderly, rendered. With his deft use of an etching needle, the artist describes the irregularities of age through a complex network of lines, dots and marks.
