For the next ten years he painted numerous official portraits of the royal family, and many portraits of subjects outside the circle at court. His works from this period are noted for their forceful and direct realism and display Goya's extraordinary skill as a colorist. In this portrait, Goya combines elements of delicate detail, the embroidery of her dress, her tiara, and the dog's collar, with an equally free, palpable brushwork. The simplicity of the composition and reduction of spatial depth give the subject a quiet and intimate character. View Provenance
