| Seated Female Nudes, 1913-1914 Ernst Ludwig Kirchner German, 1880-1938 Watercolor and pencil on wove paper 22 x 17-1/2 in. (55.9 x 44.5 cm) Norton Simon Museum, The Blue Four Galka Scheyer Collection P.1953.277 © (for works by E. L. Kirchner) by Ingeborg & Dr. Wolfgang Henze-Ketterer, Wichtrach/Bern Not on view The right hand figure is seated on what appears to be a rose and yellow lounge chair, her legs pulled up and curled under her. The figure on the left prepares to sit. The most notable feature of this work is the deft and aggressive rendering of the pencil sketch. Kirchner drew his composition in soft graphite pencil, and then added the faint and spare touches of watercolor wash. Undissolved particles of watercolor are visible in the red areas. |
