Adam and Eve
1918
Arthur Segal (Romanian, 1875-1944)
Not on View

Segal studied art in Berlin and Munich, and exhibited with the Berlin Secession. He lived in Ascona, Switzerland from 1914 to 1920, where he began his friendship with Jawlensky and first met Galka Scheyer. Fear of the Nazis forced his emigration to Spain in 1933; civil war there led him to England, where he stayed until his death in 1944. This painting is typical of Segal's "Equivalence" pictures, wherein he subdivides the canvas in an effort to combat an arbitrary elaboration of form and give the entire composition equal intensity.
