This work, printed during the first year of operation of Tamarind Lithography Workshop, was created by Clinton Adams, the founding technical director of the shop, and printed by Garo Antreasian, Tamarind’s first master printer. Under June Wayne’s direction, the collaboration of these two gentlemen—significantly, both of them artists and printers—defined the coming decade at Tamarind. Their relationship continued after Tamarind moved in 1970 to the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque, where both worked for several years. Together they also wrote the defining modern text on lithography: The Tamarind Book of Lithography: Art and Techniques (1971). Their familiarity with the unique strengths of both art and printing encouraged their success, and consequently Tamarind’s. In Golden Tablet, Adams’s simplified modernist forms of the 1940s and 1950s have become completely abstracted, and yet the painterly quality of his work—so well captured by the medium—remains.
