Screwdriver
1962
Joe Goode (American, 1937-)
Not on View

Printed by Joe Funk, a local printer who worked at nearly all of the major Los Angeles printshops, Screwdriver was Joe Goode’s first lithograph. A response to Jasper Johns’s lithograph of a hanger, the print positions an everyday object before a nondescript field of sketchy, dark gray, emphasizing both the figure-ground relationship and the realness of its subject. Printmaking has continued to be a significant part of Goode’s career, and the artist has created several successful series of prints at both Gemini G.E.L. and Cirrus Editions, among others. In his later editions, he cleverly reintroduced and reinforced the notion of uniqueness in a multiple, specifically through the tearing, cutting and even shooting the paper or fabric of the printed work.
