He was among the small number of artists in mid-20th century America who achieved international acclaim without living in New York. Diebenkorn received his artistic training at Stanford University, the University of California at Berkeley, and the California School of Fine Arts during the 1940s. His initial works were abstract and influenced by Cézanne, de Kooning, Gorky, Matisse, and Motherwell. This image is from an early series of gouaches the artist created around 1950. These dynamic compositions exhibit a deliberate and impulsive application of line and color. The spontaneity of Diebenkorn's gestures recall the improvisational jazz music he listened to at the time. |
