Gego (Venezuelan, 1912-1994)
Not on View

As the Kinetic Art movement took hold throughout Venezuela, Gego began to introduce the sensation of motion into her linear two- and three-dimensional works. In these objects, movement is not activated literally by an outside force, but through the viewer’s own perception of the image. This type of implied motion can be found in Untitled, a lithograph that the artist created while serving as an Artist Fellow at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles. To create the illusion of swaying, Gego drew parallel lines of varying density and spacing. This design, coupled with the frenzied scribbling that moves horizontally across the print, generates a subtle vibrating effect throughout the sheet. Gego explored such kinetic effects elsewhere in her oeuvre, such as in her signature delicate wire hangings.
