Abstract Figure, Sculpture in the Round
1962 edition of 1921-23 original
Oskar Schlemmer (German, 1888-1943)
Not on View

Schlemmer studied painting at the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts, and by 1911 he had his first mural commission. Like many other German young men, Schlemmer enlisted in August of 1914 and was sent to the western front by September. After being wounded twice, he was assigned to an aerial photography unit for the duration of the war. In 1920 he received an invitation to join the faculty at the Bauhaus. Previously called "Free-standing Sculpture G," "Abstract Figure" was originally executed in plaster while Schlemmer was director of the Bauhaus sculpture workshop. Most of his sculptures are wall reliefs; this is one of only two freestanding pieces that he created. After his death, Schlemmer's widow directed a limited-edition casting in metal of some of his most important pieces, this one begun in 1962.
