| Buddha Shakyamuni, c. 1200 Thailand: Lamphun, 1175-1225 Terra-cotta 16 x 9 x 4-1/2 in. (40.6 x 22.9 x 11.4 cm) Norton Simon Museum, Gift of Michael Phillips and Juliana Maio P.1999.11.07 © 2012 Norton Simon Museum Not on view This Buddha figure is from the ancient Mon kingdom of Haripunjaya in central Thailand. The artists of this region created a distinct type of Buddha image, of which this is a fine example. Salient characteristics of Buddha images from Haripunjaya include a square jaw, a wide mouth with thick lips, deeply incised lines to suggest a moustache and downcast eyes, and hair curls that resemble pointed cones. |
