Sword with Sheath
18th century
Asia: Sri Lanka, Central, Kandy
Not on View

This elaborate sword, the work of a skilled silversmith, may have been worn by a chief or noble figure during important ceremonies. Its most striking feature is the head of a lion, which appears both on the gem-encrusted hilt and in a smaller form on the tip of the sheath. A vegetal scroll bordered by a lotus-petal design adorns the sheath.
