Not on View

John Swope began his photography career in the 1930s, capturing unexpected and intimate images of artists and celebrities. He enjoyed a successful career as a freelance photographer, primarily for Life magazine. Swope took this photo in the winter of 1966, in the New York State studio of Jacques Lipchitz, one of the most innovative sculptors of the 20th century. Art historian Donna Stein was there that same day, conducting research for an exhibition on Lipchitz. Swope’s photo captures a playful moment when Lipchitz appropriated Stein’s Russian-style fur hat for his own amusement. Swope gave this print to Stein shortly after the shoot, as a memento of their day at the studio.
