Carp with Fly was printed using the same green ink and stone plate that was employed for a piece called Carp, created the week before. Using two more colors, Ruscha added a fly, dark shading and water drops. In several of his Tamarind prints, the artist included unexpected, somewhat incongruous objects at their actual size, such as a fly, a marble and an olive. He once remarked, “Often when an idea is so overwhelming, I use a small unlike item to ‘nag’ the theme.”
