In the same concert: a winner and a loser—you decide for yourself which compositions catapulted Ravel and Bartok to stardom. Ravel’s String Quartet lost the prestigious Paris Conservatory competition and was panned by critics, but his Quartet in F is a masterpiece of chamber music. Bartok's String Quartet won the Philadelphia Music Society Award and became one of the most performed chamber music pieces ever.
