Nineteenth-century Romantic artists were fascinated by their passions, inner struggles, moods and intellectual potential as well as by nature. These romantic ideas were expanded on by Romantic composers, especially in the works of Franz Liszt. Thibodeaux celebrates the 200th anniversary of Liszt’s birth by observing the many roles he played—virtuoso, composer, conductor, Romantic hero, charlatan, dandy and artist—and she explores how art and music emerge in one creative form to “awaken us to a higher, more sensitive life.” Held in the 20th-century gallery.
