Human and Divine: Face to Face with Hans Memling's Portraits

Date : Saturday, February 25, 2012
Time : 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Speaker : Maryan Ainsworth, Curator of European Paintings, The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Type : Lecture

Hans Memling was unparalleled in late 15th-century Bruges as a portraitist. He was sought after by the elite of society for his remarkable ability to portray his subjects with uncanny verisimilitude coupled with a psychological reserve. Above all, his portraits reveal a sense of humanity that unites depictions of mere mortals and divine beings. In this lecture, Ainsworth discusses this unity, as demonstrated in the pairing of The Frick Collection’s Portrait of a Man with the Norton Simon Museum’s Christ Giving His Blessing.

Held in the theater. Stickers for ensured seating will be distributed starting at 3:00 p.m.
