Type : In Studio: Exploring Historic Materials and Techniques
Join artist Sylvana Barrett for this exploration into the materials and techniques of medieval and Gothic panel painting. These elaborate panels shimmer with leaves of hammered gold and sparkle with paint from rare minerals and semiprecious stones. The program, which includes gilding, is illustrated by a display of historic pigments, binders and supports as well as period studio supplies. Two masterworks from the Norton Simon collections, Madonna and Child, c. 1340, by Paolo Veneziano, and the exquisitely gilded Branchini Madonna, 1427, by Giovanni di Paolo, are the focus of the program.
The program is for visitors of all ages, with comments and questions encouraged throughout. Free with admission; no registration required.
