Join a Museum educator on select Sunday afternoons for a dynamic discussion of art. This summerís Afternoon Salons examine influences: cultural, natural and artistic. From ancient to modern times, works of art are overt or covert transmitters of influence. Consider how the international milieu of Paris at the turn of the 20th century fostered artistic growth; how cultural, moral and symbolic meaning can be imbued by flora; and how trade impacts culture.
Discover how artistic influences from eastern cultures moved across Asia to Europe via maritime trade routes by finding traces of Asia or the Near East in diverse stylistic elements used by Paolo Veneziano; evidence of Chinese ceramics in Old Master still lifes; or the theme of the odalisque in the work of Henri Matisse.
