Artist May Jong explores the relationship between representational and nonobjective art in the Museum’s collections. Participants look at European paintings from the 14th to 18th centuries as well as Asian sculpture and compare them with works from the modern collection. They learn to break down representational images into basic compositional elements to then create original works of art. Conversely, they reconstruct figurative imagery using abstract works as inspiration. Discover the vital role that color, shape/form and composition play in art making.
Breaking Down Tradition
Participants incorporate lessons from previous classes, involving line, shape, value, color and space, to create an oil pastel piece inspired by the exhibition Lessons of the Cherry Blossom: Japanese Woodblock Prints.
All levels of experience are welcome. Each class is $20 ($16 for members), and space is limited to 18 participants. All materials and admission to the galleries on the day of class are included. Advance registration is required.
