Explore the fascinating melding of classical and Indian iconography in the Buddhist art of Gandhara (present-day Pakistan and Afghanistan) in this two-part course. At the Getty Villa (Saturday, July 21, 1:00–4:00 p.m.), examine with educator Shelby Brown the Greco-Roman styles and symbolism introduced to the East by western traders and travelers along the Silk Route. Then, at the Norton Simon Museum (Saturday, July 28, 10:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.), investigate with assistant curator Melody Rod-ari the development and evolution of an eclectic Buddhist art influenced by multiple cultures and philosophies.
