Celebrate the beauty of nature with artist Jamie Sweetman as she leads a series of drawing classes in the galleries and garden. Students practice essential drawing techniques aimed at better understanding natural forms.

Take a walk through the Norton Simon’s garden and explore the diverse sampling of trees, including a Moreton Bay fig and a cockspur coral tree. In this final session, participants are encouraged to make cross counter line drawings to better understand the natural forms found in trees.

Spontaneous as the paintings of Impressionist masters may seem, their work is actually complex and often intricately structured. Join artist Sylvana Barrett for a look beneath the surface of masterworks in the Museum’s collections in an exploration of the techniques used to create them. Period supplies and the new pigments ultramarine blue, vivid synthetic greens, chrome yellows and oranges, which made the paintings possible, are displayed to illustrate the program.

The program is for visitors of all ages, with comments and questions encouraged throughout.
