Lecture
Sensing the Sacred in Early Netherlandish Painting
Date: Saturday, April 13, 2013
Time: 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Speaker: Dr. Henry Luttikhuizen, Professor of Art History, Calvin College
Type: Lecture
Dr. Luttikhuizen examines some of the ways in which devotional paintings by Dieric Bouts, Hans Memling, and other Netherlandish artists promoted particular religious practices by evoking deep empathy among beholders. These paintings encouraged viewers to look with the eyes of their hearts. These works not only invited observers to seek the sacred but also appealed to other internal senses by offering opportunities to imagine a foretaste of the divine or a heavenly scent of things to come.
