Nineteenth-Century Art in the Norton Simon Museum, Volume 1

Written by art historians Richard Brettell and Stephen Eisenman, with technical entries by conservators Rosamond Westmoreland, Joseph Fronek and Susan Sayre Batton, this is the first critical catalogue of the Museum's unparalleled collection of nineteenth-century paintings and drawings. Brettell and Eisenman combine their notable strengths in the areas of connoisseurship, iconography, formal analysis and historical and political criticism to provide a catalogue that is at once authoritative and discursive, empirical and imaginative. Senior Curator Sara Campbell is the editor of this important edition, which examines 138 works and includes artists' letters in the collection. (Volume II will focus on the Museum's Degas collection and is expected to be published in late 2009.)
