The Norton Simon Museum is known around the world as one of the most remarkable private art collections ever assembled. Over a thirty-year period industrialist Norton Simon (1907–1993) amassed an exquisite collection of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century and South and Southeast Asian art spanning 2,000 years. Approximately 1,000 works from the permanent collection of 12,000 objects are on view in the Norton Simon Museum’s galleries and sculpture garden throughout the year.

The Museum is located in beautiful Pasadena, California, just steps from the bustling Old Pasadena district known for its shops and restaurants, and adjacent to the vibrant neighborhoods of northeast Los Angeles, Glendale and South Pasadena. Easily accessible by public transportation, the Museum also offers its employees free parking, as well as free admission to the Museum anytime, and discounts in the store and café. Full time employees can expect excellent benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance and a pension program.

The Norton Simon Museum seeks an experienced and highly motivated curator to oversee our Asian art collection, one which spans two millennia and a range of media, including sculpture, textiles, metalwork, works on paper and decorative arts from the Indian subcontinent, the Himalayas, China, Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. The ideal candidate will have a broad knowledge of the arts of Asia and be able to offer fresh perspectives on this material, working in a collaborative environment that facilitates conversations across the Museum’s collections.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • General oversight of the permanent gallery installation
  • Organizing temporary exhibitions that are drawn from the Museum's collections
  • Updating and approving bibliographic content information for a range of digital and print-based publications
  • Regularly surveying the collection and providing input on the condition and display of objects in consultation with the Chief Curator and Conservator

Curatorial background specific to South and Southeast Asian art is essential, including experience organizing exhibitions; a Ph.D. in art history is highly desirable; language skills in the candidate’s area of specialty are beneficial.

Salary is commensurate with prior curatorial experience, academic credentials and publication history. This is a full-time position with benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance and a pension program.
