The Norton Simon Museum is known around the world as one of the most remarkable private art collections ever assembled. Over a thirty-year period, industrialist Norton Simon (1907–1993) amassed an exquisite collection of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century and South and Southeast Asian art spanning 2,000 years. Approximately 1,000 works from the permanent collection of 12,000 objects are on view in the Norton Simon Museum’s galleries and sculpture garden throughout the year.
The Museum is located in beautiful Pasadena, California, just steps from the bustling Old Pasadena district known for its shops and restaurants, and adjacent to the vibrant neighborhoods of northeast Los Angeles, Glendale and South Pasadena. Easily accessible by public transportation, the Museum also offers its employees free parking, as well as free admission to the Museum anytime, and discounts in the store and café.
Summary
Reporting to the Director of Facilities, this full-time position inspects and maintains the physical operation of the facility, including HVAC/environmental systems, mechanical systems, plumbing and electrical.
Qualifications
Requires excellent judgment, attention to detail with good communication and computer skills. At least two years of prior building engineer experience is required, with preference given to prior work history in museums. Knowledge of direct digital controls, building automation, security systems, construction and audiovisual systems is a plus. A valid California driver’s license and personal automobile insurance and local residency required. Uniforms provided by the Museum must be worn when on duty.
Responsibilities
- Performs and oversees all aspects of building maintenance including HVAC / environmental / building system or devices, electrical, plumbing, roof repair, waterproofing systems, and outdoor water features
- Assists with technology issues (network, theater, satellite TV)
- Assists the Conservator and Preparators on curatorial assignments as needed
- Assists with special projects as needed
Physical Requirements
This position requires heavy lifting, bending, stretching, reaching, moving objects, extensive walking/standing and manual dexterity.
Schedule
This position is regularly scheduled Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. and requires occasional evening, weekend and holiday hours. Alarms and emergencies may require physical presence at the Museum at any hour. Constant monitoring and adjustment of environmental system using a laptop computer and/or smartphone is necessary.
Compensation
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience, and includes excellent benefits, including medical, dental, vision and life insurance and a generous pension program.
