The Norton Simon Museum is known around the world as one of the most remarkable private art collections ever assembled. Over a thirty-year period industrialist Norton Simon (1907–1993) amassed an exquisite collection of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century and South and Southeast Asian art spanning 2,000 years. Approximately 1,000 works from the permanent collection of 12,000 objects are on view in the Norton Simon Museum’s galleries and sculpture garden throughout the year.

The Museum is located in beautiful Pasadena, California, just steps from the bustling Old Pasadena district known for its shops and restaurants, and adjacent to the vibrant neighborhoods of northeast Los Angeles, Glendale and South Pasadena. Summary

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, this exempt full-time position is responsible for the physical operation of the facility, including environmental, mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems. 

Qualifications

Position requires at least ten years of prior building maintenance and engineering experience, with preference given to work histories in museums or art galleries. Excellent judgment, attention to detail, ability to maintain a high degree of discretion, with strong communication, interpersonal and computer skills are essential.  A valid California driver’s license, personal automobile insurance, and local residency are required. 

Major Job Responsibilities 

  • Monitors the appearance of the Museum's building and grounds, and takes necessary corrective actions
  • Primary contact with the City of Pasadena on grounds maintenance issues
  • Assists the Director of Security with art and building security related issues
  • Manages construction projects, selects and oversees work of professional trades
  • Negotiates contracts with vendors and monitors contract compliance
  • Supervises the Facilities staff that includes Engineers, Custodians and Theater Technicians
  • Assists curatorial department with the coordination of exhibition and conservation programs
  • Supervises gallery lighting and maintenance
  • Develops and oversees department’s budgets
  • Performs special projects as requested by the President or Chief Financial Officer

Physical Requirements

This position requires heavy lifting, bending, stretching, reaching, moving objects, extensive walking / standing and manual dexterity. 

Schedule

This position is regularly scheduled Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. and requires occasional evening, weekend and holiday hours.  Alarms and emergencies may require physical presence at the Museum at any hour.  Addressing environmental system alarm notifications using a laptop computer and/or smartphone is necessary. 

Compensation

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience, and includes excellent benefits, including medical, dental, vision and life insurance and a generous pension program.
